Code Status: Residential
The 1992 Energy Policy Act ("EPAct") mandated that all states must review and consider adopting the national model energy standard. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 specifies the most current model energy codes (IECC 2004, ASHRAE 90.1 -2004). Energy codes can vary greatly from state to state, and even from edition to edition of codes developed by the same authority. For information on the status of codes in a given state, please select a state from the list below:

BCAP is excited to unveil the new and improved version of the residential state code status map, located above. The map includes a new color scheme and revised legends, simplifying comparisons of codes across states. Click on individual states to view the most up-to-date, detailed code status information on building energy codes.
In instances where a state has developed its own code, the maps approximate its stringency in terms of the national model codes. Every effort is made to ensure that they are accurate and up-to-date. If you have any questions or comments about the maps, please contact us.
NOTE: This map reflects only mandatory statewide residential codes currently in effect. States that have adopted new codes that are not yet effective are noted with an asterisk (*).
